Hello everybody,
Scrolling through the editor I found the entries for 'Curse' in the Spellmaking tab and a 'Remove Curse' as an effect.
Now I cannot recall ever seeing a curse-like effect in Morrowind nor any of the plugins.
So I was wondering if anyone could tell me if these effects simply do not work and were therefor left out or if they were simply forgotten and can be used for something nice (like a mod where a powerful hag curses the player with something icky and he/she then has to find someone who could lift the curse).
Kind greetz & thanks!!
Milt

As far as I know curses are the same as abilities with only difference that they are removed by the "remove curse" spell effect. If I'm not mistaken, they are used by the game and the altars at the Temples have the ability to remove them. In any case, many mods use them. Although abilities are more common as they can't be removed without scripting.

I use curse spell effects in Kai Globes because the effect is constant until removed, ie the globe is put away.

The other difference between abilities and curses is a bug (or misfeature at best) what causes damage effects to do permanent damage.
On the Remove Curse effect, in my tests it worked but somewhat strangely. It's percentile (like dispell rather thet cure paralysis) but the percent seemed to be cumulative or something. For example a 1% remove curse spell never worked (as many times as I tested it) unless I first cast something like a 100% remove curse spell.
Curses are not used in the original game at all, but as Max said, they are in mods. I used to think that was strange that people used them instead of abilites and toyed with the idea of making a curse/remove curse plug-in for a while, despite the possible conflicts. But once I found about the bug mentioned in the first paragraph and realized there was a good reason for other mods to use them in many cases, I pretty much gave up on that plan.

Altars and remove curse???
Oooops.
Heh go to an altar and get a remove curse. In the case of the globes that summon creatures, the globes would then shut down.
In the case of the rest of the globes, the spell (curse effect) would be shut down, but the globe would continue to lose charge until you deactivate it. Short Circuit
Never even considered Remove Curse. Well the 3 people (myself included) who use my mod have yet to complain, so I'll leave a fix until they do. Ooooh how MIcrosoftish. I think I'll swap a few over from curse to ability and see what happens though.

Yes, I still think it's better to use abilities for that purpose except for damage effect (or if some other wierd bug shows up), but I don't know of any current mods that use remove curse.

Thanks for the responses everybody
So, an Ability which is set up to deal damage will deal permanent damage due to a bug, but a Curse will not?
So if I wanted to have ...say... an effect that would damage/drain Health, Magicka and Fatigue; I'd better set it as a Curse instead of an Ability? Or is it the other way around?
Kind greetz & thanks,
Milt

Right. And if it's not clear, by "permanent damage", I mean that it lowers the victems max health.

Thanks! Now I can spread doom upon my hapless victims and leave them stranded as terrified bunnies since they cannot simply remove a curse by drinking a potion.
Kind greetz,
